Highs Are Not Happiness

Quote of the Week: “I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened.” - Mark Twain Content of the Week: Doing more of what you love doesn't always lead to happiness Over the last month I have been stretching myself. I went to France, then dog sat for a friend, then for the 4th of July I squeezed in rafting, backpacking, camping, and hanging out on a lake. While all of this was fun, it has taken a toll on me, which led to a interesting realization. Doing more things, even if I love them, at the expense of things that keep me grounded, doesn't lead to a happier life.

Article of the Week: What is the Opposite of Happiness by Mark Manson "People often mistake highs for happiness." In this article, Mark Manson argues that happiness is long-lived and calming, vs. highs and immediate gratification.

I think this article complements my realization above perfectly. I was chasing the highs of travel, rafting, camping, etc. and then when they were over, there was a void. While it's interesting to think about, it is a tricky balance. You still should go and do all the things you love (e.g., travel, rafting, camping), but continuing to chase those highs will not lead to a consistently happy life. I think there's a lot to break down here and I'd love to hear your thoughts. Send me an email and tell me if you agree with my realization and Mark's opinion, or if you think differently.
